Summer Set, the first full-length album by Speak the Language, is a collection of 14 songs about love, happiness, and -- occasionally --the combination of the two.
From the eternal optimism of "Ideal Girl" to the melancholy barstool musings of "Josephine," and the sweet reminiscence of "Kissing," Summer Set is populated with life-sized characters and vivid storytelling, set in a soundscape both varied and visual.
"It's almost
like a film score without pictures," says Emile Menasché. "The
album has so many different musical styles because we looked at each song
as almost a short story -- its own little world."
Like a good story, Summer Set is full of humor and heartbreak. And
while lyrics tell the story, the playing sets the action. Whether it's Tommy
D's imaginative drumming, Emile's firey and intricate guitar work, or Bob's
slick organ lines, the band pays as much attention to what goes on around
the vocals as to the words themselves.
